Congratulations Emily Johnson

On January 24, 2008 Emily Johnson

tested for her Black Belt.  Results were announced  on Thursday,

January 31.  Congratulations to Emily Johnson for being the 99th student

promoted to Black Belt in the 26 years of James Henry Taekwondo Center.

See below for a list of those 99.  The 100th candidate for Black Belt should be ready in August 2008.

Black Belts

I would like to acknowledge 101 individuals who have trained with and earned their Black Belts from me since I opened my first school in 1982.  I have had the pleasure of teaching thousands of students over the years, but it is a small handful that demonstrated the desire, dedication, effort and commitment to reach the goal of Black Belt.  Those individuals that have earned their Black Belts from me will always be remembered by me as special.  It was my great pleasure to have helped them reach their goals.  I hope others will have their names added to the list below.  To those Black Belts that still train and continue to reflect the spirit of Taekwondo, you are the backbone of the school and your inspiration to your juniors is greatly appreciated.

AAU Taekwondo Nationals

July 2 - 7, 2007    Ft. Lauderdale, FL

13 Athletes went to the 2007 AAU Taekwondo Nationals

12 Medals were brought home in Olympic Sparring, Forms and Point Sparring Competition

Outstanding Athlete of the event was Patrick Wilson.  Patrick won the 14 - 17 Light Middle Division in Olympic Sparring against 21 other competitors.  He won four of the five fights with a seven point gap.  In Forms he won against 16 other competitors.  In Point Sparring he won against 8 other competitors.  This was his best competition of the over 60 he has competed in since beginning Taekwondo at our school at the age of 8.  The win in Olympic Sparring won him an invitation to the AAU Taekwondo Team Trials being held September 8 - 10 in Ft. Lauderdale.  Patrick, who is 17, will be competing up in the 18 -34 Light Weight Division where he must compete against 5 others in a round robin format for the coveted spot on the AAU Taekwondo National Team.  He looks forward to the process of training to make the team.  Below is an article about Patrick's accomplishment in the Atlanta Journal.

NOTEBOOK: Taekwondo gold rains on Wilson
Date: July 19, 2007 Publication: Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The (GA) Page Number: JF9 Word Count: 295
Kennesaw Mountain rising senior Patrick Wilson has had a busy summer in the sport of taekwondo. Wilson competed at the 2007 AAU Taekwondo Nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., during the July 4 weekend and was the only competitor of more than 2,200 with gold medals in sparring, weapons and form.

A second-degree black belt at the James Henry Taekwondo Academy in Kennesaw, Wilson will return to Fort Lauderdale in September to compete for a spot on the AAU National Team.

Special recognition to Tyler Farr for his great effort and performance.  Tyler competed in all three types of competition as well.  In Olympic Sparring in the 12 - 13 Black Belt Division he won his first three matches.  He won his third match with a score of 8 - 1.  His last fight was very exciting and came up a bit short.  Tyler created the same excitement in Point Sparring when he fought for the Gold, but lost the final point in over time.  Great job Tyler.

This was just another part of the experience of training in Taekwondo for those that went to Ft. Lauderdale.  Congratulations to you all......

Tyler Farr tested for his 2nd Dan Black Belt test on April 12, 2007.   Tyler was ready for his 2nd Dan test on the 2nd Anniversary of his 1st Dan test conducted in February 2005, but had to wait until his 13th Birthday.  Two years of training after 1st Dan and being 13 is a minimum requirement for 2nd Dan.  So on his birthday Tyler was tested hard for his new rank.  He performed at a high level on everything that he has learned since he began training at the age of five.  Tyler performed 14 Forms (over 300 movements), did at least 400 kicks, 20 one step sparring, nine knife defense, 8 self defense one steps, falls, bag work, sparring and board breaking.  He broke seven boards with three breaks: two boards - turn back skip side, two boards - jump spinning back kick, and three boards - flying side kick.  All three breaks were successful on the first attempt.  Tyler has raised the bar for all those that follow him in testing for this level.   Belt presentation was Thursday, April 19, at 7:00 p.m.  Congratulations!!
